Epic Characters.

1. Sage Durvasa was the son of Atri and Anasuya.(=free from envy

and jealousy) Because he was born of Shiva’s anger, he had an

irascible nature. He was known for his short temper.

According to chapter 44 of the Brahmanda Purana,

Brahma and Shiva once got into a heated quarrel. So violent was

Shiva’s rage, as a result of this quarrel that the Devas fled from

His presence in fear. His concert Parvati  complained that Shiva

was now impossible to live with.Realizing the disharmony His

anger had caused, He decided to deposit His anger into Anasuya,

the wife of sage Atri. From this portion of Shiva, deposited into

Anasuya, a child was born  who was named Durvasa (one who

is difficult to live with).

2.Kripacharya-Kripa became an Acharya, teacher of royal children

giving him the name Kripacharya.His twin sister Kripi married Drona.

Kripacharya was among the Maharathi’s, who fought on the Kaurava’s

side  against the Pandavas in the Kurukshetra war in the Hindu epic of


3.Ravana, even though a demon was a learned  scholar as well. He was

the author of Ravana Sanhita which contains miraculous methods of

attaining good health and fortune.

4.Hanuman is the son of Anjana and Kesari. He is the symbol of strength

and energy.

5.Shurasena was the father of Krishna, Balarama and Subhadra.

6.Shiva and Vishnu were born to sage Atri and Anasuya as Durvaasa

and Dattatreya.

7.Vidur in Mahabharat    was the son of Vyasa and the maid Parishrami

(maid to both queens Ambika and Ambalika).Vidur was treated as

half-brother of  Pandu and Dhritharashtra. Vidura was known for

his intellect and served as minister in Pandu’s and Dhritharashtra’s
